- There are two key themes here: The struggle with the Anglo-Saxons; and how we should remember the Vikings? The exhibition shows how recent archaeological evidence has rehabilitated the Viking reputation.
- You will need to lend the narrative of raids followed by settlement with an analysis of why the Viking reputation has changed over time.
- By using current research you not only make the subject more real and exciting, and better resourced, you also help pupils to see why historical interpretations are constantly changing in the light of new evidence and insights.
- Comparing contemporary accounts of the Vikings written by Saxon monks and Viking leaders not only presents marvellous opportunities for literacy, but also helps pupils to realise that we must always ask who wrote this and why is it different to other accounts?
