Rationale for KS1 history planning
The KS1 history curriculum offers you considerable choice in which topics you choose and how you sequence them. Nowadays it involves a more thematic approach looking at individuals doing work in the same area but at different times in the past. This should help build greater coherence into your scheme. Alongside that there is a recent move towards offering pupils a curriculum that is more inclusive, diverse and local.
There is probably more freedom to decide on your OWN history topics at Key Stage 1 than any other key stage. So it is really important that you carefully think through your rationale. OFSTED will certainly be expecting a clearly thought-through explanation for your curriculum choices and how they build pupils’ historical understanding progressively. This, of course, involves developing pupils’ understanding of disciplinary concepts as well as building their connected knowledge of the past.
