As a preliminary activity try using sheets of unused tissue paper. Challenge the class to pass the unfolded piece of tissue paper from pupil to pupil without making a crease or mark, retaining its pristine condition. Ask them to imagine the paper is a bird with a broken wing that must be handled so delicately.

Wrap objects

Wrap objects in tissue paper (you should always use special acid-free tissue for wrapping historical or other precious objects). Children have to try to guess what they are from the shape.

Bury objects

Bury objects (or fragments) in layers of sand in a tray for the children to dig up and record using a grid. To make this a really valid activity, mark out an acetate sheet, cut to size with grid coordinates. Pupils can then identify where they found the object.

Word games

Pass an object round; each child must say something
