Pupils’ attention is grabbed with a powerful story, supported by detailed analysis of two contemporary sources. Having had the changes which happened in that period explained, using a detailed PowerPoint presentation to give context to the period, pupils then examine an anachronistic image which purports to show that state of medical knowledge in 1800 but contains anachronisms for pupils to find. Pupils are then introduced to the key developments at this time which paved the way for the breakthroughs in medicine they will learn about in session 4 .
