It is assumed that you will already have a few hunches about what you will find based on your informal visits to lessons, assessment data, formal lesson observations etc.

How do I go about it?

 1. Be clear as to why it is necessary

Be open to colleagues about why it is being undertaken and establish a no-blame openness. What will work sampling tell you that other evidence won’t?

  • is it the range of written work ( if so don’t forget to check the work on the walls or in assessment folders, if they exist)
  • Is it the pitch of the work?
  • Is it the degree of independence shown? NB Many common assessment tasks will not enable this to be shown.
  • Is it to do with variety of task, fitness for purpose, challenge?
  • Is it to do with attitudes: completeness, effort, response to comments
  • Is it the quality of week-to-week
