In this session the focus moves to pupils’ working more independently, carrying out their own research in groups and then developing powers of advocacy.

The lesson culminates in a role play of ‘Medicine’s got talent’ in which pupils weigh up the importance of 6 key medical pioneers of the 19th century, applying appropriate criteria for judging significance.

Learning objectives

  • Pupils can name 3 breakthroughs and their inventors and explain why they were turning points.
  • Higher attaining pupils should be able to see that the breakthroughs were linked; one without the other would have been far less useful.
  • Pupils can articulate what the problem was and how the solution helped changed the course of history
  • Pupils can explain why an achievement may be ‘significant’ inc. number people affected, directly saved lives, impact at the time on others’ practice, impact since.
  • Pupils realise that many struggled to have their ideas accepted
