In this brief concluding session, pupils look back over 300 years of history and make a judgement about the best time to have lived, applying what they have picked up in the previous 5 sessions and justifying their conclusion

Learning objectives

  • Pupils use timeline to locate key events and concept of duration
  • Pupils reach an informed opinion giving 3 benefits of their chosen 80 years when people’s health was best
  • In doing so show that they have rejected other possibilities and give reasons for this

Activity 1: Time teams

Working in groups of 5, pupils give themselves a name as a Time team. Their job is to be the team that most accurately places key breakthroughs in medicine on the dated timeline. I find this works best as a washing line on which pupils peg the large ‘breakthrough’ cards that are supplied as RS1. You will notice that these include
