What are the statutory requirements to assess history at KS2?

  • There are no statutory requirements for end of Key Stage 2. The only time levels are required, is at the end of Year 9.

Do we need to bother with any assessment of history, then?

  • Yes, because it helps you to diagnose what the children can do and understand and helps you to take them further
  • It also helps you to review your planning in the light of what you know about children’s understanding as revealed by your assessment.
  • It helps you to pass on information to their next teacher about strengths and weaknesses. Often some children have a real aptitude for history, even though their literacy skills are poor. This needs recognising.

So what do we need to assess?

  • Focus on what were known as the key elements : cause, change, interpretations, use of sources
