The aim of this flexible activity is to help pupils to make sense of the local war memorials they may have seen by introducing them to a range of clues that historians would use. The accompanying PowerPoint presentation slowly reveals these clues, one by one, as if adding pieces to a jigsaw. Once pupils are familiar with the purpose of the memorial and its characteristic features, they are encouraged to design their own.

It is also hoped that this activity will not only engender interest in the locality but will stimulate discussion at home too, perhaps leading to pupils carrying out their own research relating to names that might appear on the memorial, including their ancestors.
