This session is straightforward in that pupils are introduced via a short video to a variety of reasons which not all pupils will fully grasp on first showing. To reinforce the ideas pupils work in groups to attempt a diamond 4 prioritising activity which helps them not only to discuss four possible reasons but also to think through which were the most important.
A short recording activity further reinforces the key ideas.

- Pupils are able to make deductions from images of castles as to their purpose.
- Pupils dismiss 2 incorrect reasons and suggest 2 that were most important.
Step 1
With slide 2 projected ask pupils to discuss in pairs any reasons they can think of 3 reasons why people would build castles. Stress the chronological dimension explaining that it was not until 1000 years ago that castles started appearing. But why? That is what today’s lesson
