Do we need to bother with any assessment of history, then?
- Yes, because it helps you to diagnose what the children can do and understand and helps you to take them further
- It also helps you to review your planning in the light of what you know about children’s understanding as revealed by your assessment.
- It helps you to pass on information to their next teacher about strengths and weaknesses. Often some children have a real aptitude for history, even though their literacy skills are poor. This needs recognising.
So what do we need to assess?
- Focus on what were known as the key elements : cause, change, interpretations, use of sources

- Strictly speaking they are NOW to be used only in Key Stage 3.
