Never a great fan of Niall Ferguson at the best of times, I am now left seething with rage at his latest ill-informed rant on the Today programme. We have, of course, frequently heard criticisms of the fragmentary nature of the existing history curriculum-that it is all Hitler and the Henries. But can we really accept that the history teaching profession we love is no more than ‘a total disgrace’, as Tariq Ali and Ferguson would have us believe? Ferguson started to backtrack when he said that we need to see the reality of what is happening in schools first-but he still didn’t allow that to stand in the way of a good soundbite. Can a professor of history really have so little respect for evidence and show such as lack of circumspection to blurt out that history has never been worse taught?
