In the words of an ex-minister for education , Nick Gibb, National Curriculum history at KS3 will be a slimmed-down, but knowledge-driven, to ensure that secondary school pupils are given the cultural literacy that will enable them to participate in society. For once, history has been spared preferential treatment. Apparently the same approach holds for all academic subjects. Whilst Gibb is now out of office-too good to sack?- you can see the traces of the Hirschian philosophy that beguiled Gove and Professor Matthews with his wretched history fact quiz . we’re clearly in for a fight but the arguments articulated by Gibb in the Daily Telegraph a couple of days ago were so wafer thin that it will be easy to demolish. We’ll see what we’re in for within the next couple of weeks. Let battle commence .
