Ann Treneman’s Times article was one of the funnier contributions to the discussion of Gove’s ridiculous comments about the origins of the First World War. He is turning the whole debate about the national Curriculum into a charade. One Tory stood up in the commons and demanded that the war of 1812 be included in the National Curriculum. What next? At a time when there is so much that could be done to support history teachers with the implementation and assessment of the new National Curriculum Gove seems intent on never letting us forget that he is just pushing his luck and courting controversy, almost for the sake of it. Primary schools will be mad if they let this man’s whims force out of their history curriculum the very topics that have been the basis of success over the last 20 years.
