Any good at predicting what will happen later this week with A level results? A right royal battle is going on behind the scenes. Are we moving back to norm referenced proportion of students achieving each grade to counter fears of grade inflation? The system of awarding norm referenced grades was abolished in 1983 and grades were awarded according to merit. A grades have since risen from 10 per cent to 27 per cent and the pass rate from 70 per cent to 97.8 per cent, fuelling claims of grade inflation. It’ll be interesting to see who wins out: those who genuinely want students and their teachers to be rewarded for their fantastic hard work or those who are far more concerned about their political futures.
