Using topical cartoons to help with GCSE source questions

SMART TASK: Using topical political cartoons to help with GCSE Modern World source analysis

This task, available on the downloadable PowerPoint is adapted slightly from the one provided by Andy Butterworth, Bridgemary Community school, Gosport.  It engages students with analyzing a topical, fun cartoon and asks then to apply the same approach to one about the Treaty of Versailles.  The punch line as you see has been blanked out so that its appearance has even greater effect.

What makes this really come alive is a 45 second clip from the Guardian site in which Steve Bell explains and shows why he drew the cartoon in the way he did. The whole clip is well worth watching in its own right but for classroom use I would recommend starting the clip at the 3 minute 25 second mark.
