Assessment for GCSE HistoryThis section looks at different ways of sharing assessment objectives with students and at how best to set targets. By Key Stage 4 most students will have developed an ability to evaluate the work of other students as well as their own, especially if the exam board mark schemes are re-written to make them more student friendly. Whereas as at Key Stage 3 there is still a lot of uncertainty regarding the use of National Curriculum levels, at GCSE the grade criteria are more transparent. The focus therefore must be placed firmly on how you can help students to improve their own answers, rather than spending too long marking work which can easily be done by the students themselves. Indeed, I would argue that the more students can mark their own and others' work, the more familiar they become with what is needed to squeeze out those extra marks.
